The FDA just reissued a warning about the use of teething gels or liquids that contain benzocaine for children under two. Over the counter products like Anbesol, Hurricaine and Orajel contain benzocaine. While the risk is rare, the use of benzocaine gels can lead to a serious condition called methemoglobinemia, which reduces the amount of oxygen being carried through the blood stream. The most severe cases can lead to death.
Signs and symptoms of methemoglobinemia include:
- Pale skin, lips and nail beds
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Confusion
- Headache
- Rapid heart beat
To treat teething pain in children under the age of two, follow the American Academy of Pedicatrics’ guide:
- Chill a teething ring in the refrigerator for the child to chew on
- Massage the gum’s with your finger
