A “tongue-tie” is a popular term that refers to this condition and can be treated through a procedure called a frenectomy. TOT occurs because tissue under the tongue or lips does not disappear during fetal development. Adequate tongue movement is crucial to the development of the upper jaw. If the tissue is too tight to have free movement of the tongue or lip, other muscles may be incorporated by the body for chewing, speaking, and swallowing. This may result in jaw and neck issues in the future. It can also lead to the following symptoms and future health issues as well:
- OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea)
- Neck and shoulder pain
- TMD (TMJ pain)
- Gastro-intestinal issues
