Rest that restores you
Are your nights broken by snoring or by a machine you can’t get comfortable with?
At Adams Dental, we understand how much restful sleep shapes the rest of your health. That’s why our Madison sleep apnea dentist offers oral appliance therapy, a quiet, portable alternative for the right patients.
Snoring and sleep apnea
aren’t the same thing
- WLoud, habitual snoring
- WGasping or choking during the night
- WLong pauses in breathing, noticed by a partner
- WMorning headaches
- WDry mouth on waking
- WDaytime sleepiness after a full night in bed
- WTrouble focusing or staying alert
- WWaking up unrefreshed most mornings
The impact of untreated apnea
Sleep apnea doesn’t stay in the bedroom. Repeated drops in oxygen put strain on the whole system, and research links untreated OSA to:
- WHigh blood pressure
- WHeart rhythm problems
- WIncreased stroke risk
- WUnstable blood sugar
- WHigher crash risk from daytime sleepiness
We’re not telling you this to frighten you. Treatment works well, and the sooner it starts, the better the outlook.
What is oral appliance therapy?
An oral appliance is a custom device you wear only while sleeping. It looks a bit like a retainer or a sports mouthguard. It holds the lower jaw slightly forward, which helps keep the airway from collapsing. There’s no machine, no hose, no mask, and no power outlet. Dr. Allison Adams is a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine, and as a Madison sleep apnea dentist, she offers oral appliance therapy as one of the airway treatments here at Adams Dental.
Oral appliance therapy is a treatment that helps maintain a more open airway during sleep. It isn’t a cure for obstructive sleep apnea, and it doesn’t replace your physician’s care. Due to patient variability, results vary.
What the first few weeks feel like
The first nights feel strange for almost everyone, and that’s completely normal. Wear the appliance every single night, even when it feels annoying. Most people adapt within 2 or 3 weeks of consistent use. We’ll advance the jaw position gradually rather than all at once. Smaller moves stay more comfortable and tend to work better anyway. Call us if something hurts!
Is an oral appliance for you?
If CPAP hasn’t worked out, or you travel often and want something you can pack, an appliance may be what you need. We’ll review your sleep study, assess your teeth and jaw joints, and tell you whether it fits your situation.
Quiet Nights
An appliance works silently, with no motor and no airflow, so both you and your sleep partner get an undisturbed night.
No Mask, No Machine
Nothing straps to your face and nothing plugs into the wall, which removes the single most common reason people give up on treatment.
Built to Travel
The device fits in a case the size of a retainer box, so a weekend away or a long work trip doesn’t interrupt your treatment.
Custom-Fitted Care
Each appliance is made from scans of your own teeth and adjusted in stages, so the fit stays comfortable as your jaw position advances.
